Kitties for Kitties Art Exhibition/ Zine Launch – The Trauma Of Being was launched at the Garden Slug Cafe ( 55 Lor L Telo Kurau, Singapore ) on the 5th of June 2016. It’s on going until the end of July, so if you’re in town, stop by at the Garden Slug for a delicious meal as well as to check out the exhibition~!
Below is the article taken from my website about the exhibition and my development process towards it’s final development and execution. Over the next three weeks I’ll be releasing an article exploring the ideology behind each of my paintings. For now, lets talk about good food and good company.
Tackling the age-old issue of belonging in this crazy world of technology and madness, Ai decided to take an introspective look at how she defines herself as a human being, and explored once again the many folklores and fairytales that she has spent hours pouring over and researching over the years. After many sleepless nights, one creature stood out to her the most, and that was the Selkie.
Taken from the Orkneyjar
“Selkie is simply the Orcadian dialect word for “seal”.
So, selkies are a very common sight across Orkney. Heads bobbing above the waves, they are often seen by the shore, watching inquisitively with uncannily human eyes.
To the onshore observer it is not hard to see how the legends surrounding the selkie-folk — the seal people — sprang into life.
Orkney has many tales concerning this shape-shifting race.
Unlike the Finfolk, who retained their malicious tendencies throughout the years, the selkie-folk have come to be regarded as gentle creatures, with the ability to transform from seals into beautiful, lithe humans.”
Ai felt that in many ways the Selkie represents her quiet personality and it’s creative side, as well as her deep love of the sea. She created three paintings to represent the different facets of her personality and how, as she says “draws from a deep wealth of serenity that has been weathered by the sea in her heart”. Her paintings are fun, delicate and endearing, and each painting has a story of it’s own.
THE SEAL CHRONICLES ON THE CAFE’S ART GALLERY WALLS
The exhibition itself was like something out of a dream. Strange, eclectic and whimsical, it followed Amy’s vision of draping prints and after the Owner of the Garden Slug, Aaron, offered us faerylights, it transformed the space into a peculiar wonderland.
Good friends, Good food, Good Exhibition, Good Memories
